Mohair

Mohair is a natural fiber obtained from Angora goats, known for its lightness, softness and subtle sheen. Its airy structure provides warmth without heaviness, making it suitable for soft knitwear and seasonal layers.

We use mohair across project AJ117 knitwear, choosing it for its distinctive texture, gentle luminosity and ability to create volume while remaining lightweight.

Mohair fibers have a naturally smooth surface that gives the yarn its characteristic sheen and fluid movement. The fineness and length of the fibers influence their softness, strength and overall texture.
Origin

Mohair is collected by shearing Angora goats. The fibers are then carefully cleaned, sorted and spun into yarn before being knitted or woven into fabric.

The quality of mohair depends on the fineness and length of its fibers. Finer fibers provide a softer feel, while longer fibers contribute to strength and structure. The naturally smooth surface gives mohair its characteristic sheen and soft movement.
Properties

Lightweight and insulating: Provides warmth without feeling heavy.

Soft with a natural sheen: Smooth fibers create a gentle shine and soft texture.

Airy volume: Creates a light, fluffy texture with natural volume.

Strong and resilient: Durable fibers that help maintain the quality of the garment.

Naturally elastic: Offers flexibility and helps the fabric maintain its shape.
Responsible Mohair

We prioritize mohair sourced from farms that follow animal welfare and responsible land management standards.

We work with suppliers certified under the Responsible Mohair Standard (RMS), which addresses:

Animal welfare and respectful treatment of Angora goats.

Prohibition of specified harmful practices.

Responsible land management.

Traceability through certified supply chains.

Our approach to mohair focuses on transparency, careful sourcing and long-term responsibility.
Care

Mohair needs gentle care to maintain its softness, airy texture and natural sheen.

Wash on a wool cycle at 30°C or hand wash, if permitted by the care label.

Use a mild detergent suitable for delicate wool fibers.

Avoid excessive friction and agitation.

Do not tumble dry.

Dry flat to maintain the garment's shape.

Mohair fibers can felt when exposed to friction, heat and excessive movement. Gentle handling helps preserve the garment's natural volume, softness and sheen. Always follow the garment's care label.
